This year from the five Ladies Pairs that Lionmede entered into the Chelmer Ladies pairs competition, we were pleased to see Lionmede being represented in both the Rose Bowl and the Plate competition. On Tuesday 6th September at Stock and Buttsbury Bowls Club in the most appaling conditions both pairs put up an admirable fight.
In the Rose Bowl, Doreen Miller and Margaret Stallen ( who had substituted for Viv Hills during the competition) had a poor start and despite all there good efforts conceded the competion to the winners from Ingatestone - Jean Palmer and Jenny Paternoster.
In the Plate competion, Val Wilkes and Sue Broome took an early lead but their opponents from Great Baddow, Heather Smith and Jean Ashton fought back. In increasingly heavy rain the score was even at 13 shots all but in the last two ends, Val and Sue held their nerve and took the match at 17-13. As they picked up their bowls to come of the green the heavens opened in a torrential downpour and everyone retreated to the Stock clubhouse for a welcome refreshments after the presentation of trophies.
